A WAITETUNA AIRMAN

MR HERBERT A. COOPER

An arrival in the Dominion by the Kemuera on Tuesday was Mr Herbert A. Cooper, of Waitetuna, son of Mr Justice Cooper, who returned after a long absence in the Old Couni try, part of which was spent in the I Hying schools of the Hendon Aero- | drome. Mr Cooper is a fully certi- | Seated airman, having taken his I pilot's brevet under the new regulaI tions which came into force at the beginning of this year. These have largely increased the difficulty of the test. In an interview with a Wei- ! lington Host reporter, Mr Cooper mentioned that he was the third pilot I to get the certificate under the new ' regulations. Instead of live figures | of eight in the air, as under the old regulations, the airman has now to maKe ten in two series of live, at an elevation of not less than 100 metres. He can descend with or without the engine cut off, but he must land within a stated distance from the observer. The third test consists of a volf.lane with engine cut otf from a height not less than 100 metres. Mr Cooper took his third test from a height of nearly 1000 ft. The engine must be cut otf when the aeroplane is in movement horizontally through the air, and the pilot must make his own adjustments to secure the requisite angle for the volplane. Speaking of the right-hand turn—a bugbear with many beginners—Mr Cooper said it was only a little awkward at the start. It presented no difficulties afterwards. He had gone through his tests and his period of four months in the school—the J. L. Ewen School—at Hendon without breaking the least part of his machine. He had learnt on a Caudron similar to that flown by Mr J. W. H. Scotland. Mr Cooper was asked as to his own intentions. Had he brought a ma- ! chine with him? The airman smiled. "Well, 1 haven't an aeroplane on j board the Kemuera. As for my in- ! tentions, 1 have really nothing to say ! on that point at the present time."
