The Hamburger Nachrichten protests strongly against a speech by General Smuts, Minister for Defence in the Union of South Africa, at a banquet in Johannsburg. On that occasion General Smuts predicted that the Union of South Africa would include at no distant date the greater part, perhaps all ttie land south of the equator. The Nachrichten asks if greater British influences are behind the speech, and adds: "For us to surrender German South Africa, even in the far distant future, is outside the range of discussion. Such incredible language is calculated to create bad blood in Germany.
