An Interrupted Elopement London, February 4. A man boarded the steamer Kinui at Plymouth and discovered his wife and two children in tha second-class witli a lover. Tha woman reluctantly abandoned her elopement on being told that sho would be departed wnen she reached Australia. Fatal Hotel Fire. New York, February 4. The St. Nicholas apartment hotel at Sacramento was burned down while the guests were at breakfast Five persons are known to be dead. The fire was caused through a defective oil-burner in the basement. Girl's Heroism Recognised. Received 9.50 p.m., 4th. Fremantle, February 4. At a meeting of citizens Miss Florrie Waters was presented with a purse of sovereigns and £lO subscribed by Sydney citizens. Mr Waters, the light-keeper at the Bathuist Point lighthouse, Rotlnest Island, and his daughter, Florrie, aged 18, were fishing in a dinghy, which was upset in the breakers in a narrow passage. Mr Waters was unable to swim, but his daughter was a powerful swimmer. Time after time tho pair were- washed from the upturned boat, and the girl each time brought her father back. Several times the bout overturned on top of the man, and the girl dived under and dragged him out. The .struggle lasted an hour, until help was forthcoming. Yass By-Election Received 10.5 a.m., sth.
