RAGLAN COUNTY COUNCIL
For the fifth year in succession the Raglan County Council has col lected ail its rates, lend occupied by natives not being placed on the rate book. For the year 11)12-13 the total of all rates was £0377 Da 3d, for which rate demands were posted on the Ist August, 1912, and the last lot of rates was paid on the 4th February, 1913. it is indeed hard on the European ratepayers, who pay up so promptly, to see natives practically exempt from rating owing to the present cumbersome and defective law governing the enforcement of the payment of rates due by natives, and it is hoped that some amendment of the law will be made next session to allow their lands to bear their proper share of local taxation. The Raglan County Council and the ratepayers are to be congratulated on having so efficient an officer as Mr Marsland, whose success in the financial portion of his work, is equalled in the carrying out of all his other duties. The early collection of ali rates is most beneficial, as it enables the county to avail itself to the full of Government subsidies. We doubt if any other county in the Dominion can show a like record.
