LOCAL BODY LOANS

At n meeting of the Waipa Counly Council yesterday the chairman read a newspaper extract giving a resume of the new Local Bodies Loans Act, 1912, which he said provided for special trearaent for outdistricts. He said that although they were centrally situated they were unfortunate in several ways. Their roads had to bear a lot of outside traffic, they had not a single quarry in the district from which to obtain supplies of metal, and a great deal of their area was taken up by swamps. He moved that they should approach the Government and request that they should be classified as an outJying district, and also ask the Government to sanction a loan of £SOO in the Pirongia special rating district, and £2500 for the Tuhikaramea special rating district, both of which had been approved. Cr. Ryhurn endorsed these remarks. He thought it most desirable that the Government should be acquainted with the .disabilities under which the county labours with its heavy volume of outside traffic and the extreme difficulty of obtaining metal. He emphasised the fact that on the Tuhikaramea-Hamilton road the cost of the metal would average 18s a yard, which savoured of paving with gold. Cr. Teasdale thought they should lose no time in having the county placed on the list of outlying districts.

The chairman’s motion waa carried, and the clerk and supervior were instructed to draw up a comprehensive report upon the matter, which will be submitted by the council to the Prime Minister or Minister for Public Works at the earliest opportunity.
