SOCIAL AT PUKERIMU.

On Friday night, June *Jth, at the local school, opportunity was taken bv the residents of Pukorimu, to bid farewell to Mr . and Mrs W. N. Sturgis; and family, and, at Ihe same time, to convey to Miss Winnie Scott and Mr 0, E. Gane, in view of their approaching marriage, the host ■ i.iios of their friends for their future happiness. There was a large and repcsentative gathering of both young and old. which testified to the popularity of the guests. The evening’s entertainment took the form of a progressive euchre party, interspersed with vocal items, followed by a supper and dance. Songs were sung by Mrs J. M. Scott, Mrs C. Scott, and Mi A. M Fisher, Misses J. S. Fisher and 1,. Wait gave recitations. The last item, a most appropriate duet, “Farewell,” was sung with much expression and feeling by Misses Rita and M. M Sturges. The prizes were presented by Mr Jno. Fisher, and were won by Mrs R. D. Fisher. Miss Sturges, Mr A. W. Pearce and Mr A. W. Gane. Mr Jno. Fisher, in a characteristic and reminiscent speech, referred to bis long friendship with Mr and Mrs Sturges, dating back even before the first settlement in the district. Continuing, he said Mr and Mrs Sturges and. family had always assisted in anything pertaining to the welfare of the district, and though they all regretted losing them from the distinct, yet they rejoiced that Mr and Mrs Sturges were retiring, while they were yet able to enjoy their wellearned rest. Mr Sturges suitably replied. Mr Fisher, also, in a happy speech, on behalf of their friends, wished Miss Winnie Scott and Mr O. E. Gane every future happiness. Mr Gane briefly replied. After two hours’ dancing a most enjoyable evening was brought to a close by all joining hands and singing “Auld Lang Syne,”
