By Telegraph. —Press Association. Te Kuiti, Last Night. For the last two days torrential rains have been falling, and 'the roads are now in a very bad state. They are practically ruined for the winter, and settlers once more 'are at the commencement of a period of isolation. Daring the summer months the work carried out by the Public Works Department was anything but satisfactory, and the attempts that are being made to rectify matters are worse than useless. All heavy carting will be stopped from now on, and the ever useful packhorse will once more be brought into requisition. Eltham, Last Night. An inquiry was held today before Mr Kenrick, S.M., into the circumtsnces connected with a fire on January 23, which resulted in the burning down of a farmhouse belonging to John Robertson, occupied jjy him and a share milker named Nicholas Albert Maddern. Robertson had the house and contents insured in the New Zealand office for £IBO, the claim being immediately settled. Maddern also had a policy in the Guardian for £l6O on his furniture and effects, including a piano belonging to Robertson, which was already insured. ‘Maddern’s claim was not settled, pending an inquiry. The magistrate found that the house had been wilfully set on fire with intent to defraud the Guardian Company. Maddern was subsequently arrested. Dunedin, Last Night Two prisoners were brought up for sentence this morning before Judge Williams. In the case of William Julian, aged 27, who had pleaded guilty at .Cromwell to a charge of false pretences, the judge held no offence had been committed. All the prisoner did had been to give a valueless cheque. He ordered accused to be dischaiged without sentence. In the case of William Lambert, who had pleaded guilty at Oamaru to carnally knowing a girl under 16, His Honour remanded the case till Thursday. till he knew more about it.
