Dr. Purdy's Successor.

By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. The new health officer for the Auckland district. Dr. R. H. Makgill, previously chief Government bacteriologist, and stationed at Wellington, arrived here from the South by yesterday’s express, and was soon actively engaged upon his new duties. It might be mentioned that Dr. Makgill held his present appointment some years ago, being transferred in 1904. Speaking to a Press representative Dr. Makgill stated that ho would still retain the general supervision for the Dominion of the pathological and bacteriological work, which would necesstiate occasional visits on his part to Wellington. The bacteriologist at Wellington was now Mr J. H. Hurley, who had been engaged on that class of work for the past six years. “1 shall from time to time confer with him on special questions arising.” remarked the doctor,‘‘and he will prepare and send to me all special work, such as diagnosis of histological specimens for medical men.” Another post that Dr. Makgill will stil retain will be that in conjunction with Dr. Maclaurin, head of the Analyst Department, of acting as advisers to the chief health officer in such theoretical matters appertaining to the Food and Drugs Act as the standards of purity, etc. ”1 am very glad to be back in Auckland, which is my old home,” concluded the doctor, "and as I know the district well, 1 hope to be able to carry on my combined duties without any serious inconvenience to local bodies and others.”
