Cambridge Borough Council.
A special meeting of the Cambridge Borough Council was held yesterday at noon to consider the tenders for improvements to the saleyards and act thereon. There were present —The Mayor, and Crs Reid, Richards, O’Toole, Ferguson, Wilkinson, and Hartly. The following tenders were received: —P. M, La Trobe, £263; F. A. Marcroft, £254. The Mayor moved that the latter be accepted. Cr Hartly asked if they had authority to call for tenders for the work. He stated he could find nothing in the minutes giving such authority. The Mayor said; “ That is all right. It was understood at the special .meeting of council held at the saleyards that plans should be prepared, and when the works committee meeting was held it was resolved to call for tenders for it.” Continuing, His Worship said it was in anticipation of the loan being carried, and if that was not done they would take it out of the district fund. It would mean an extra sixpence on the rates, but the people would have to pay it. Hamilton was making a big bid to get their horse sales, and they must be up and doing. The motion was seconded by Cr Ferguson. Cr Wilkinson thought it was wrong to spend the money before the poll re the loan was taken. He did not think it would be legal to do so, and they would find themselves in the same mess as a borough down South was. It appeared as if they (wished to force the hands of the ratepayers. He should be compelled to vote against the motion from conscientious motives. The motion was then put and carried, Crs Wilkinson and Hartly having their protests recorded. Cr O’Toole said some of the councillors were too jolly conscientious; they must stretch matters a bit sometimes. That closed the business, but a discussion was continued for some time as to the wisdom of the proceedings.
