Raglan Comity Councl.

The usual meeting of the above commenced yesterday at Ngaruawahia. There were present Crs Hewett (chairman), Bankart, McKinnon, Annandale, Johnstone, Crawford, Riley, and Edmonds. —Bridge Across Waikato. — This question came under discussion. Cr Annandale said that if a bridge were to be put across the river it should not be at Huntly but at Rangiriri or some place further down the river, and suggested Churchill. In consequence of engineering difficulties at Rangiriri, he thought Churchill would be more suitable. The Chairman said that the site should be decided by the question as to which would benefit the greater number of settlers. Cr Crawford said that the decision should be loft to the engineer. The Chairman said he was convinced that Huntly was not the best site. He thought it should be further down the river. Cr Bankart said that the question was whether the council should contribute to a bridge at Huntly. Cr McKinnon said that in the interests of settlers he would sooner sec the bridge erected at Rangiriri. Cr Johnstone said if only one bridge was to be built it should be put lower down the river than Huntly.

Cr Annan tale moved: That the bridge sho be further down the rive than H and that the Raglan County ; cil would contribute to a bridge lo down. ider. — The Chairm; reported that Mr Hunter’s tender for metalling 4500 cubic yards of Waingaro section of Valley road at 8s 8d per cubic yard had been accepted. —The action of the chairman was confirmed. —Telephones.— The Superintendent of Electric Lines wrote that there was a balance of £8 7s 2d duo to the guarantors of the telephone line. The Te Akatea and Waingaro line showed a debit of £29 14s lid. The Glen Murray and Pukakawa line showed a deficiency of £lB 2s. —Traffic By-laws.— Messrs Wynyard and Purchas wrote forwarding amended traffic by-laws. —Native Rates. — A considerable amount of correspondence was read re collection of native rates. The Chairman said that the only conclusion to be arrived at was that it was useless to send notices. The Native Minister throughout the correspondence had only shuffled.

Cr Annandale moved: That the chairman and Cr Bankart go to Wellington and interview the Premier and thoroughly thrash the matter out. The Chairman suggested that if the natives pay rates they should have some representation on the council. The council unanimously agreed. Cr Annandale’s motion was then put and carried unanimously. The council then adjourned till 9 o’clock this morning.
