NEWCASTLE ROAD BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the above board was held at the office, Ohote, on Wednesday. Present—Messrs E. C. Shepherd (chairman), C. Limmer, H. U. Poynter, E. 11. Nicholson, and S. Fullerton. The Department of Eoads forwarded proclamation of road taken through Section 7, Iloretiu, with a request that it bo advertised in the local papers.—lt was decided to do so. Correspondence was read re the sale of Section 76, (Horotiu, to Mr Zcllman. This matter was left in Mr O’Neill’s hands, the board to act in accordance with bis suggestion. Mr Higginson waited on the board re the new crossing needed to give an outlet to Mr Lawson and himself.— This matter was deferred until later when Mr Tatton was present, when the latter agreed to accept .£2 as compensation for extra fencing, and £1 per annum, the public to have the right to use tho present road through his land. Mr Moilatt waited on the board and thanked tho members for the assistance given in opening the road to his farm. Mr W. H. Sopor requested that certain improvements be made on his road, and also drew attention to tho pine roots on the same road.—lt was decided to do something when the fine weather sets in.

Mr Limmer drew attention to the dangerous state of the Pukete road, and suggested that a few days’ sanding be done.—Loft in bis hands.

The District Road Engineer informed the Board that other persons were interested in Sections 157 and 158, Pukete, and their consent would bo necessary before the proposed deviation could be completed.—lt was decided to take steps to get this done.

Mr F. C. Blackett wrote in reference to the damage caused to the Ohote landing reserve when putting logs into the river, and also waited on the Board in connection therewith. —It was decided, as other places are available for the purpose, to notify Messrs Coulthard Bros, to desist from putting logs upon the lauding reserve, tailing which they will be sued for damages.

Mr Barford requested that repairs be made to the road near his farm, and also offered to give all the sand required free of charge.—lt was decided to do some work when the 'weather improves, also that the offer of sand be accepted. Mr Thos Napier requested permission to erect a temporary fence within the road boundary to protect a live hedge from stock, and also submitted a plan of bridge at Higginson’s culvert. The request was granted, and Mr Napier thanked for the plan. Mr Nicholson was authorised to get a set of pipes for Sagar’s road, and also reported that the liability for some noxious weeds at Tangarakau. lay between Mr Prendergast and the native land owners.

Before separating Mr Poynter drew attention to a letter in Tuts Waikato Aeous, which interred that be had used bis position of the board for his P“rsonal benefit, and he had never done this.—The chairman said that no member had devoted so much time and attention to road works as Mr Poynter, and living on the county road it was hard to see how he could benefit himself. This was concurred in by the other members, and the matter dropped.
