It has been arranged that the halt of the Land Comnission which visited Waikato will also visit Gisborne, and the mouthers left Wellington yesterday.

Money orders for despatch by this mail should be obtained by 1.30 p.m. and letters registered by 5 p.m. on Thursday. There was on exhibition at Mr Chileott’s shop, Hamilton, this morning a splendid carcase of four-tooth wether mutton, which weighed dressed 1101b. The sheen was fattened on the Lausdowne Estate, Walton, and was one of a splendid line sold at the N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Co.’s last Hamilton sale.

A ball given by tho bachelors of Whatawhata was held in the Public Hall last Thursday evening, The music was supplied by Mr Percy Meredith, of Auckland; this, no doubt, accounted for the large attendance, for, despite the inclement weather, the hall was well filled. Great credit is due to the committee for the way everything was carried out. The catering was in the capable hands of Mr J. Bettley, of Hamilton. The floor was in good order and dancing was kept up till the early hours, when everyone went homo satisfied with their night’s recreation. At the Auckland Police Court yesterday Mr Kettle, S.M., talked very plainly to a wife-heater. A man named Carthy pleaded that it was only a slight quarrel and he was drunk. Mr Kettle told him ho had treated his wife most brutally, and be intended to put down such assaults with a strong hand. In this ease tho difficulty was to punish him, as tho punishment would fall still harder on his family, As it was tho first time, ho would be convicted and prohibited for twelve months, hut if he came up again for the sanm thing ho would get no mercy.
