EXAMINATION FOR JUNIOR NATIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS.

The Secretary of the Board of Education received from the Department at Wellington notice of the intention to hold the first examination for the award of these scholarships on Jauuary sth and 6th at convenient centres within the education district. A supply of notices, regulations and forms of entry will be issued to head teachers bo soon as the same are received from Wellington. Entries are to reach the office of the Board by Saturday, the 19th inst. Five scholarships are allotted to the Auckland district. Boys or girls who are not over 14 years of age on December 31st inst., who have been under regular instruction at a public school for the three years 1901, 1902 and 1903, who for the last six months have been under regular instruction in the subjects ot the Jbifth Standard or a higher standard at a public school, and whose parents arc not iu receipt of an income exceeding £250 a year, are entitled to compete. Not more than one scholarship can be gained by any one school, and the head teacher is required to certify that each candidate entered by him has a reasonable chance of obtaining a scholarship. The Department is most emphatic in impressing upon teachers the necessity of strictly limiting the number of candidates, and that they will not shirk the responsibility of selecting the most likely candidate from their respective schools.
