IMPERIAL TRADE

London, July 14. THANKS to the preferential tariff* obtaining in Canada, a Glasgow firm has secured the contract for 20 locomotives for the Canadian Pacific Railway. London, July 14.

Sir Robert Giffen, in a letter to the Times, suggests the holding of an inquiry into how tar the self-governing colonies are really protectionist. He declares that the amount of the Empire's whole production receiving the shelter of tariffs doss not exceed l-3000th part, allowing for the protection of l-100th part ©f Autralia's production. Sir Robert Giffen adds tbat the increased purchasing powers of the colonies from any reduction in their duties would not necessarily be devoted to the purchase of additional British manufacturies. A Freetrade Union has been formed with Mr Arnold Morley as president. Tbey intend to urge that Mr Chamberlain's policy will comolicate trade relations with the colonies and endanger the stability of the Empire. The members of the Union include the Earl of Aberdeen, Mr Asquith, Earl Beauchamp, Lord Carrington, fj'ir W. V. Harcourt, Mr John Morley, the Marquis of Ripon, Sir Geo. Trevelyn, Sir H. Campbell-Banner-man and Sir E. Grey. The new body called the Tariff Reform League has absorbed the recently established Tariff League. The object of the Tariff Reform League is to promulgate Mr Chamberlain's policy and begin the widespread dissiminatioa of information. Duke Sutherland is president of the Tariff Reform League.
