LORD HOPETOUN.

At the farewell banquet to Lord Hopetoun tributes made in tho speeches to Mr Chamberlain's share in the achievements of federation were received with great enthusiasm, and regret was expressed at his absence. Earl Selborne, who presided, in proposing the Prince of Wales, announced that His Highness had honoured him with a command to deliver a direct message to Lord Hopetoun and the people of Australia that he regretted an engagement made long prior to the banquet being contemplated prevented him from being present. Lord Selborne, addressing Lord Hopetoun, said: " His Highness desired me to say that it was a special pleasure that he was invited to this farewell. His Royal Highness will watch your administration with most confident and hopeful interest, and is confident that no better selection for Governor-General could have been made to Australia. His Royal Highness wishes mo to indicate that he has given practical proof of the great interest he has taken in federation, and also desires to mark his sense of the loyalty and devotion of the colonies to the Motherland in connection with the war, and by concurring jointly with the Princess of Wales and Her Majesty the Queen in their approval of the Duke of York's visit to Australia." The message was recaived with tumultous applause. (Received October 5, 1 a.m) London, October 4. Every part of the Empire was represented at Lord Hopetown's farewell banquet, including Lords Jersey, Kintore, Hampden, Aberdeen Ampthil, Glasgow, Brassey, Sirs Gerald Smith, H. Worman, W. B. Percival, Walter Buller, Agent-General Reeves, The Hon. Mr Rolleston and a large number of representative Australians. A' guard of honour, consfsting of invalided Australian soldiers, were received with acclammation on entering. Wallance Kennedy sang Gillott's song, "Australia's Cherished Dream." Sir W. Laurier, the Canadian Premier, cabled that United Canada sends its greetings to United Australia.
