A DASTARDLY ACTION.

♦ ATTEMPT TO WRECK A TRAIN. THE PLOT FAILS. (BY TELEORAPII—PRESS ASSOCIATION). Curistchurch, This Day. What appears to have been a deliberate attempt to wreck the express train from Dunediu was discovered last night. When the train reached the Colombostreet crossing and slowed down to enter the station, it struck a piece of steel rail which had been jammed into the blind points to keep them open, a sledge hammer being so fixed aa to close the other side of the points. Fortunately the engine, which skidded over the steel rail, kept on the line, though the driver and fireman experiensed a considerable shock. The engine then struck a sleeper, which had been placed across the line, and carried it along on the cowcatcher right up to the station platform. There is a \curve just at the spot where the obstruction was placed, and had the engine gone over the first portion of the train must have been wrecked.

The watchman on the crossing had not observed anyone about. Some months ago logs were placed across the line about the same spot.
