A GALLANT ACTION.
MAN DROWNED WHILE ATTEMPING TO SAVE LIFE. (DY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION). Wanganui, Last Night. A painful sensation was caused about noon to-day, when Mr Geo. Watts, a carter, aged 40, was drowned while attempting to rescue a young woman who had jumped off the town bridge. Watts jumped off the wharf and swam out some distance, but seeing that the boat was going to the assistance of the woman, turned back, but before he could reach the shore sank to rise no more. A sailor named Miller also jumped from the wharf and rescued tho woman before she sank, holding her up till the boat reached them. The body of AVatt was found about three-quarters of an hour afterwards, and attempts made at resuscitation but without effect. Restoratives had to be applied to Miller, who was in an exhausted condition.. The name of the womrn is not at present known.
