Settlers of Te Mata and surrounding districts had the opportunity on Wednesday Aight last of bidding farewell to Mi- C. K. Oornforth, on the uccasion of his retirement as headmaster of the local public school. Thff-' schoolroom was crowded to excess with friends from all directions, and all combined in making the evening's gathering as enjoyable as possible. The entertainment took the form of a social, musical selections and recitations being contributed freely, while during the intervals dancing occupied the lueution of the younger portion of the assembly. Miss Puraley kindly officiated as pianist, The refreshments provided by the ladies, formed an agreeable change at various stages of the programme. D.mcing was kept up vigorously till daylight. During the evening Mr Baukart, Chairman of the Te Mata School Committee, presented Mr Cornforth, on behalf of residents and friends, with a valuable marble timepiece, aud in doing so, touched upon Mr Cornforth's association with the school for the past scveu years, during which period he had deservedly earned the good-will of all with whom he had come in contact. Master D. McCrackeu, representing the pupils and old boys and girls, then read an appreciative letter, testifying to the esteem in which Mr Cornforth was held by his pupils, accompanying it with an engraved album. Mr Cornforth suitably responded, thanking oil, young and old, for their good wishes and kind expressions.—(A correspondent).
