THE WAIHOU STALLION PARADE.
Tiik stallion parade under the auspices of the Te Aroha Agricultural Society, held at Messrs McNicol and Co.'s saleyards at Waihou yesterday, was a fairly representative one. The following horses were paraded : Thoroughbreds.—Mr F. J. Marshall's Malice, by The Dauphin—Bessemer, by Musket ; Mr F. J. Marshall's Leolantis, by Leolinus—Atlantis, by Thortnanby ; Mr N. Dickey's Brookby, by St. Leger— Reproach.
Clydesdales. —Mr W. Walker's Young Dunmore, by Lord Dunmore ; Mr A. Orr's Banker, by Awamoa— Violet Ist.
Roadsters.—Mr 0. Short's Merry Boy, by Merry legs. Taking the thoroughbreds first, Leolantis from his style, appearance and breeding was far and away the best stamp of horse to select for breeding racing stock ; but, for a good general service horse, either for upstanding hacks or for carriage horses, Malice, from his size and bone, and for the quality of the stock he has left in the districts in which he has been used for the list two or three years, could not be easily passed over. Two two-year-olds, bred by Mr F. Cole, of Motumaho, just run in off the swamp, and which were on the parade ground, were the best possible testimony to the value of Malice, as a sire for getting good upstanding hacks or light harness horses. We understand Mr John Gordon, manager of the New Zealand Land Association's property at Woodlands, who is not a bad judge in these matters, has decided to put a number of his light mares to this horse, Hardly a better recommendation than this is needed. As regards the Clydesdales, both the horses on pirade lacked size and weight. Of the two, public opinion was in favour of Mr Walker's Young Dunmore. This horse should get good active farm horses. Merryboy, the roadster, is well known to Waikato breeders, he is practicilly a small edition to his sire Merryleg3. Although lacking size, he is a great little horse, and by all accounts his stock are showing plenty of size and style, with the strong distinctive qualifications pertaining lo the great trotting family from which he has descended.
