MERCER.

Regatta.- A well attended meeting was held here recently. with the object of ascertaining the feasibility and desirability of resuscitating the aquatic carnival and regatta for which this township was at one time famous, but which has been allowed to lapse, for various reasons, during the past few years. Among those present were several influential natives whom the business of the Land Court had brought to the settlement. The -.natter was fully discussed and the " pros " and " cons " well threshed out, witli the result that, if the committee appointed to take the business in hand find it at all practicable, there is every probability of the Mercer regatta again becoming an annual fixture. The date upon which it is proposed to hold the event is somewhere about Christmas or the New Year. A balance of about £2O from the last regatta, which is in the hands of the treasurer, will form an agreeable nucleus upon which to build a substantial prize fund. Obituary.—The news of the death of Mrs Hunter, wife of Mr Matthew Hunter, our well-known and respected storekeeper, which took place in Auckland on the 21st inst., caus< d a feeling of intense regret throughout the whole of the district. As was announced in The Argus a fortnight back, Mrs Hunter had beeu to the city for medical advice and attendance, and suffering a relapse on her return home, had been again compelled to visit Auckland in order to be near her physician, her illness being of a serious and complicated nature. The malady, however, baffled all medical skill, and terminated fatally as above stated. The deceased lady's remains were brought to Mercer by train on the following day, and were interred in the local cemetery, a large concourse of people, from 'til parts of the district following the body to the grave. Mrs Hunter was esteemed and beloved by all who knew her ; she possessed a singularly amiable disposition which endeared her to the hearts of all with whom she came in contact, and her death has created a void in Mercer which will be most keenly felt. Much sympathy is felt and evidenced from all quarters for the sorrowing relatives in their bereavement.—(Own Correspondent).
