Mr Mann explained that he had called the meeting in deference to the wishes of a number of residents who were anxious to see a meeting on the Queen’s Birthday. It was not intended to be antagonistic or in opposition to any other gathering. In oidev to get on with the business he moved that Mr Edgecambe take the chair. Mr 11. F. Sarnies then addressed the meeting, stating that in common with many others he was of opinion that the time had arrived when the residents of Hamilton West should have a recreation ground, and in his opinion the sec'ion leased by Mr Qmiltrongh from the Borough on the Frankton Road, which was a recreation reserve, was a suitable site in every respect, and Mr Qualtrongh was quite willing to allow a track to be formed on it. It had been stated that he was working in antagonism to the Sydney Square grounds, this was entirely without foundation, as he did not consider the holding of the proposed sports in any way affee’ed the Boxingday gathering or the Waikato Amateur Athletic Club. He always had done and would continue to support Sydney Square sports so long as hereinaincd in Hamilton, and in order to pat something before the meeting he moved, “ That it is desirable that an athletic meeting, consisting of ’cycling and foot sports, be held in Hamilton on May 24th." This was seconded by Mr Mann and carried. It was then proposed hy' Mr Drury, seconded hy Mr Bell, “ That the Waikato Amateur Athletic and ’Cycling Club be asked to carry cut the meeting.” An amendment to this was proposed hy Mr Manning and seconded by Mr B. Farr, to the following effect : “ That a committee of those present be formed to make all arrangements for carrying cut the meeting.” On being put to the meeting the amendment was carried by a large majority. On the proposition of Mr Manning, seconded by Mr R. Farr, the following were appointed a committee : —Messrs Sarnies, Barton, Mann, Mann, jun., Qualtrongh, Marker, Edgccumbe and the mover, with power to add to their number. Mr Manning was appointed secretary, and Mr Sarnies treasurer. It was also resolved that it he an instruction to the committee to take the earliest steps for forming a recreation ground in Hamilton West, and that in tlie meantime the committee should put the track in Sydney Square iu good order to enable training to be carried out there. Mr (4. J. Mann was appointed canvasser to obtain funds for the necessary expenditure, and as a result of an appeal to those present a sum of nearly til was promised.
