RAYON FIBRE.
HUGE INCREASE IN WORLD PRODUCTION. EXTENT OF SUBSTITUTION INCERTAIN. SOME SIGNIFICANT FACTS. (Received This Day, 0.5 a.m.) LONDON, October 8. The Imperial Economic Committee’s summary of industrial fibres production shows a marvellous increase in the world production of rayon staple fibre from 8.3 million lbs. in 1929 to 133.8 million lbs. last year, chiefly as a result of the development of the industry in Italy and Germany. The extent to which rayon has been substituted for other textile fibres remains problematical. On the . one hand, the use of rayon in mixed goods has undoubtedly widened the scope of the utilisation of cotton and wool. On the other hand, it has probably replaced natural fibres in certain branches of the hosiery industry, if not elsewhere. It is significant that the three largest producers of rayon—Japan, Italy and Germany—are particularly dependent on foreign sources of supply for their textile raw materials.
