The Wairarapa High School crosscountry championship will be held this afternoon, starting from the Park Oval about 3.30 p.m. Parents, friends and all interested are invited to be present.

The honour of being the first woman barrister to appear in wig and gown as counsel in the Auckland Supreme Court is held by Miss Marion Holloway, who appeared yesterday morning for one of the parties in a case relating to interpretation of wills. Ltd., is to be held in the association’s Queen Street premises to-day at 2.30 p.m. At the conclusion of the ordinary general meeting a meeting of preference shareholders will take place for the purpose of electing two directors to represent preference shareholders.

The Wairarapa High School Pipe Band has been fortunate in securing the services as 'instructor of PipeMajor Murdo McKenzie, formerly PipeMajor of the Seaforth. Highlanders. Under his capable guidance the band is making rapid progress and intends to compete in the B grade Pipe Band contest at Palmerston North next Anniversary Day. Delegates to the Congress of the Empire Chambers of Commerce were ad- ■ dressed yesterday by the Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon. W. E. Parry) on the coming New Zealand centennial. Mr. Parry extended an invitation to delegates to return in 1940, or, if they were not able to come themselves, to recommend their friends to come.—(P.A.y An increase of 677 in the number of men found employment under the Government’s placement scheme was recorded for the week ending last Saturday, bringing the total number since the inception of the scheme in the middle of May to 8872, 4610 of these being placed in permanent positions, 2378 in temporary and 1884 in casual positions. The total placed to date by the Masterton Labour Bureau is 199 (permanent, 114; temporary, 75; casual, 10).

A fine of £5O and the cancellation of his licence for two years was ijnposed by Mr. E. C. Levvey, S.M., in Christchurch yesterday on Robert Alexander Johnston, a carrier, on a charge of being intoxicated while in charge of a motor-truck. Johnston pleaded not guilty. The evidence showed that his truck levelled a well-lit concrete safety zone, and that he was under the influence of liquor when examined at the police station. The defence was that Johnston was suffering from concussion as a result of the smash, which had been caused by bad visibility.—(P.A.) The annual meeting of shareholders of the Masterton Permanent Investment and Building Society was held on Monday afternoon, in the society’s offices, Queen Street, Masterton, Mr. D. M. Graham (chairman of directors) presiding. The sixtieth annual report and balance sheet disclosed a profit for the year to August 31 of £1561, against £1451 for the corresponding period of last year. The percentage of profit on average share capital was shown at 5.21 per cent., against 4.90 per cent, last year. During the period under review, total loans advanced from £55,275 to £64,363. The retiring directors, Messrs E. G. Eton and J. L. Hughes, were declared re-elected, there being no other candidates. The auditors, Messrs G. W. Sellar and N. H. James, were reappointed for a further term of twelve months, without opposition. Gardener wanted.
