SPEED LIMITS.
IN BOROUGH AND TOWN ABEAS. MOTOR BILL AMENDED. (By Telegraph—“ The Age” Special.) WELLINGTON. July 31. By an amendment made by the Legislative Council in the Motor Vehicles Bill, at the request of the Minister of Transport (the Hon. R. Semple), the nationally imposed speed limit of thirty miles an hour in boroughs, town districts and other local areas will be subject to a modification and alteration which the Bt. Hon. J. G. Coates described as very wise. The amendment was agreed to by the House of Representatives to-day. Mr. Semple explained that there were borough and town district areas so extensive that motorists, after passing the congested area, were obliged to continue for a long distance within the local boundary, though the road was as clear as where no such limitation applied. The amendment he had secured would enable a greater speed than 30 miles an hour to be permitted under such conditions when the motorist got outside the congested area, conditional on the Minister of Transport fixing the boundary and marking it. Mr. W. J. Polson: “What town will put a sign up!” Mr. Semple: "No town. The Transport Board will put up a sign at my direction. ’’
