PLACEMENT SCHEME

SPLENDID RESULTS BEING OBTAINED. OPERATIONS IN MASTEBTON. Upwards of 400 men are now registered at the Masterton Employment Bureau under the placement scheme. Many of these men, however, are in employment, but are seeking another occupation for which they are more fitted, as the scheme is not confined to unemployed alone. Employers are now looking to the Employment Bureaux to satisfy their labour requirements and in this respect the scheme, which has gained their confidence, is functioning exceptionally well Only men fully approved as qualified for the positions desired are recommended to employers and the result is that in almost every case the employers are well satisfied. The Masterton Employment Officer, Mr. J. G. Haiiaghau, yesterday detailed ■to an “Age” representative the procedure adopted in enrolling an applicant. The names of those registered are entered on an index card, which gives in concise form such particulars as are of use in placing the applicant, such as details of education, previous employment, if prepared to accept distant work ete. Applicants are also listed in an occupational index. After thorough investigation of testimonials, for which purpose late employers are asked for a verification of the applicant’s capabilities, the Department issues an employment certificate, which an employer regards as a standard. Circulars are dispatched to all employers likely to be requiring men, seeking their co-operation in furthering the scheme. All advertisements for labour of any kind are answered by the Employment Officer, asking if the Department may submit the names and records of suitable candidates and interviews are arranged. Furthermore, the officer, if he hears of any building project, immediately communicates with the contractor with a view to placing the necessary men. Many employers as a matter of course now advise the bureaux when they require any men. These efforts on the part of the Masterton officer have been eminently successful in many cases. Mr. Hanaghan gave particulars of a number of men who had been placed in permanent employment as the result of his answering advertisements and inquiries from employers. In one case a local firm wanted a stock agent and although no one in this category was actually on the books one was found «nL P l aCed ’ while the pl “ 6 he left wa » mled by the bureau from its registered Another very important phase of the scheme i B that it is co-ordinated throughout New Zealand, a weekly occupation return being circulated to all bureaux in the Dominion. This return gives particulars of the number of men. classified under a comprehensive list of occupations, m every centre in New Zealand, so that officers may at once determine, if they have no candidates • or a certain class of employment on oualifle7 n r eiaC -‘ ly Khere ““ qualified for that particular kind of work may be obtained.
