NO MORE WAR.
IF THE DEAD COULD RETURN. BRITISH PRIME MINISTER’S DECLARATION. LESSON THE WORLD IS SLOW TO LEARN. (Received This Day, 1.13 a.m.) LONDON, July 29. 44 If the dead could return, there would be no more war,” was Mr. Baldwin’s dramatic declaration to Canadian ex-soldiers assembled in Westminster Hall upon their return from the pilgrimage to Vimy. 4 4 You all tasted the bitter cup of war,” Mr. Baldwin added, “but the dead drained it to the dregs and would never allow a younger generation to taste it. Many of our troubles are due to the fact that we lost our best men in the war. If the world can find no way of settling disputes except by war when we are still finding and burying the bodies of those who fell twenty years ago, then the world deserves to perish.” An impressive silence followed Mr. Baldwin’s closing words, the vast gathering being deeply moved. Then came an outburst of terrific cheering as the Canadians filed out to visit the Cenotaph.
