LOCAL AND GENERAL.
A large attendance of spectators at Wairoa yesterday witnessed a hockey match between the Fijian ladies’ team and Wairoa. A ftist game ended in a draw two all.—(P.A.)
A representative and influential deputation of ratepayers and residents waited on the Deputy-Mayor of Carterton, Mr. D. L. Taverner, on Monday and asked him to accept nomination for the position of Mayor. Mr. Taverner said he would be pleased to accept nomination. Attention is drawn to the second Swimming Club dance to be held at the Masonic Hall on Saturday, August 1. The social committee has spared neither effort nor expense to ensure patrons a most enjdyable evening. There will be two popular novelty dances in the lengthy and varied programme.
The Friendly Societies’ tournament was continued on Tuesday evening, with the following results:—Druids beat Hibernians, 15/8; Foresters beat Oddfellows B, 13/11; Waipoua beat Oddfellows A, 8/7, Next week’s draw, to be played in the Hibernian Lodge Room, is as follows:—Foresters v. Hibernians; Waipoua v. Druids; Oddfellows A v. Oddfellows B. It is anticipated that between 7,000 and 10,000 Maoris will visit Wairoa in May next year for the opening of the Sir James Carroll Memorial Hall, a Wairoa Press Association message reports, and already preliminary arrangements for their stay are being made. The arrangements are in the hands of Sir Apirana Ngata and efforts probably will be made to obtain a ■special permit to hold a race meeting in connection with the celebrations.
