PLACEMENT SCHEME.
FIGURES FOR PAST WEEK A RECORD. CONFIDENCE OF EMPLOYERS GAINED. WELLINGTON, July 28. Figures supplied by the Labour Department show that to July 25, 2647 people were placed in permanent jobs since the inauguration of the placement scheme. A week before the total was 2222, so that 425 placements were effected from July 18 to July 25, a record for any one week. It is stated that the scheme has definitely "caught on” with many employers, these employers now entrusting their staffing troubles to the placement officers. The following are the figures:— Whangarei, 22; Auckland, 186; Hamil ton, 63; Gisborne, 62; Napier, 84; Hastings, 3; New Plymouth, 58; Wanganui, 63; Palmerston North, 90; Mhsterton, 112; Lower Hutt, 118; Petone, 120; Wellington, 478; Nelson, 117; Greymouth, 92; Christchurch, 208; Timaru, 105; Oamaru, 88; Dunedin, 314; Gore’ 10; Invercargill, 254. Total, 2647 (P.A.) UNEMPLOYED RETURNS. INCREASE OVER PREVIOUS MONTH. WELLINGTON, July fa. The following figures relating to unemployment as at July 4 were released by the Minister of Labour (the Hon. H. T. Armstrong) to-day: Registered nut not eligible for relief, or awaiting placement on relief, 3,189; receiving intermittent work-relief, 15,280; receiving sustenance allowance without work 24,470; total. 42,939. At the same date there were in addition 11,299 men engaged in full-time employment on works which were aided by subsidy from the Employment Promotion Fund making a total of 54,238, which is a reduction of 4744 compared with the July figure of last year. The total for June, 1936, was 53,034.—(P.A.)
