STRUCK BY TRAIN.
MAN KILLED AT LEVEL CROSSING. CAR HURLED ACROSS RAILS. CHRISTCHURCH, July 27. Leonard Olliver, a Post and Telegraph Department radio inspector, was killed when his car was struck by a train this afternoon on a level crossing in Langdon’s Road. Olliver was alone in the car, which was travelling east over the line towards the North Road. The car was struck by a goods train from Rangiora and was hurled across the rails. The driver’s head was knocked against one of the car windows, causing grievous injuries. Death is believed to have been instantaneous. Mr. Olliver was a married man. The view of an approaching train is partly obscured at this spot by a clump of trees. The front wheels of the car were over the line and the engine struck the body of the car. Skid marks on the road showed that the driver had made frantic efforts to stop the car, having too late seen the approaching train. Tn the crash, the car was turned completely round and hurled against a heavy wood barrier at the cattle stops, smashing one post at ground level.—(P.A.)
