With one dissenting voice a conference of the representatives of most Taranaki towns at Bitham last night declared in favour of a provincial Saturday half-holiday and appointed a committee to place the matter before Parliament.—'(P.A.). As the result of a raid carried out by the Wairoa police on Saturday on premises known as Galbraith's Billiards Saloon, North Clyde, the proprietor, Lionel Egbert Galbraith, aged 46, appeared in the Police Court charged With using the premises as a common gaming house. On the application of the police he was remanded to appear to-morrow. —(I\A) At Wanganui Albert Frederick Clarke was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment for obtaining credit by fraud from a Wanganui boardinghouse proprietor, and one month for the theft from a letter of £1 at Waverley which was forwarded there by mistake and taken delivery of by the accused. Clarke had only just been released from prison after serving three months on another charge of obtaining credit by fraud.—(PA.) The body of Tai Taimona, of Rahotu, Taranaki, was jfound in a motorcar parked on the roadside near the Okato Hotel. A single barrel .shotgun was leaning against the back of the front seat with the muzzle upwards. There was a large wound 'in the deceased’s head. The discovery was made by a man walking to work whose attention was attracted by seeing a pool of blood by the rear wheel of the car. An inquest was opened and adjourned sine die.

Two surprise parties, one from Wellington, visited the home of Mr. and Mrs. B. Iveson, Essex Street, on Saturday night, the occasion being the coming-of-age of their daughter, Miss Mollie Iveson. A most enjoyable time was spent in dancing, singing and games. The guest of the evening was presented with a handsome door-key, made by a Wellington friend of the family. After supper which was provided by the ladies of the party, and the cutting of the birthday cake, the gathering was brought to a close with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne” and cheers for Miss Mollie Iveson, Mr. and Mrs. Iveson, and those who had organised the parties. The following resolution was passed at the conference of nurses and dea conesses of the Maori Methodist Mission at Wanganui yesterday morning: “We note the rapid increase in Maoris of mixed blood, a very fine and promising type of people, but the really pure-blooded Maoris is decreasing. We are deeply concerned at the various diseases rampant among Maoris, and urgently appeal to the Health Department to appoint more district nurses in Auckland, the Waikato, the King Country, and Taranaki, also medical specialists to study conditions and give advice and remedy the present deplorable position. Certain diseases are more prevalent than ever, and affect the well-being of the majority of Maoris.”

Liability for the loss of a young man’s right eye following a motor-car collision on the Hastings-Napier highway on Easter Saturday was admitted in the Supreme Court at Wellington yesterday, before his Honour Mr. Justice Smith and a jury, by Moss Wylie, a Hastings dentist. The plaintiff, David Bett, of Wellington, a 23-year-old pupil wallpaper salesman, claimed £4500 damages, the question before the Court being an assessment of the quantum of damages. Counsel stressed the serious nature of the injury, stating that the remaining eye contained only the bare minimum of industrial usefulness. The defence offered no evidence and after three-quarters of an hour deliberation, the jury awarded £2,276 Is 7d damages.—(P.A.)
