ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL.

WAIRARAPA BEAT THE REST. The first division Association football game played at Carterton on Saturday between a Wairarapa team Versus the Rest was won by Wairarapa by 7 goals to 3. Powson was playing as centre-forward for the Rest apd had bad luck in not scoring on three occasions, once with a stihging shot that hit the crossbar. The Wairarapa forwards, on the whole, were quite useful, although they might have fed their right winger, G. Longworth, to better advantage. He can be relied upon to put over beautiful centres. The halfback line was patchy and was inclined to hang on to the ball too long instead of feeding the forwards. Neither of the backs showed the same form as previously, but no doubt they w r ould rise to any occasion. The custodian, F. Pool, played as usual a good sound game, making some hard saves and his clearing was brilliant. I. Jolly, playing in y>al for the Rest, gave an excellent exhibition, his anticipation being at times quite professional but he is inclined to leave his goal a little too much at times. Goals were scored for Wairaraya by R. Bell (4), Ward, Allan and J. Bell and for the Rest by Pow--Bon, T. Bell and T. James. The referee was Mr. T. E. Handeock. TEST MATCH. AUSTRALIANS FAR SUPERIOR. DUNEDIN, July 4. In an Association football test between New Zealand and Australia, although the first spell was fairly evenly contested the Australians were definitely superior in the second half, when New Zealand was owing to the injury of Leslie and Hatchard. The latter was limping and transferred to the left wing. Skinner, who was changed to centre-forward, was carried off ten minutes before time. Australia, with a brilliant combination, won by seven goals to one. The scorers were: Smith (four), Price (two and Cameron. New Zealand’s goal was a penalty by Skinner. (PA.) _____
