WOMEN’S INSTITUTE.

SOLWAY-MANAIA MEETING. The monthly meeting of the SolwayManaia Women ’« Institute was held last Thursday. The president, Mrs. McGovern, presided over a large attendance. The roll call ‘‘Something Antique,” brought forward many valued treasures, some of the articles exhibited having been heirlooms for many generations. The members farewelled Mias Billington, who’ is leaving the district. The president, on behalf of the members, presented her with a small gift. Mrs. Munn was elected to fill the var cancy on the committee. What proved to be a most interesting demonstration was given by three members of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, Mesdames Thompson, Bartosh and Lock. These ladies were heartily thanked for their instructions on first aid. The competition for the month, a knitted article, was won by Miss Blatchford (ladies’ jumper), Mrs. Woollett (child's frock), and Mrs. Scrivener (ladies’ jumper) being equal 2. Mrs. Scrivener secured first in a knitted bed jacket and Mrs. Cotton second. Special prizes were awarded to Mrs. Allen (babies’ shawl), Mrs. McLachlan (men’s pullover), and Mrs. Rayner (crocheted jumper). In the cooking class for a one-egg cake, Miss Blatchford was first and Mrs. McAlister second. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Aplin, Colway, Blatchford and Miss Blatchford. The institute’s first birthday will be held on August 6.
