CANTON GOVERNMENT DEFIES JAPAN. HOSTILE DEMONSTRATIONS INEVITABLE. REACTION TO AGGRESSION . IN THE NORTH. (Received Wednesday, 7.40 p.m.) CANTON, June 17. Thtere are grave fears of armed Japanese intervention in South. China, following on the Canton Government’s defiant reply to the Japanese General’s protest against anti-Japan-ese demonstrations. The reply blpntly declared that the demonstrations were inevitable sequels to Japan’s aggression in North China and that if Japan wished them to cease she must change her behaviour. The reply promised fell protection for Japanese nationals, but emphasised that the authorities could not prohibit anti-Japanese activities because they represented “a manifestation of the people’s will and the natural reaction to Japanese action.”
