HOCKEY UMPIRES.

(To the Editor).

Sir, —In reply to your correspondent, “Fair Go” of your issue of the 29th inst., re the appointments of hockey umpires to women’s fixtures.—ln the first place, I would like to ask the correspondent if he or she would not do better by offering to serve as an umpire and thereby help to relieve the task of appointments each Saturday, instead of rushing into print. This procedure is very detrimental to the game when there is the Hockey Umpires’ Association to approach on matters of this nature. It is obvious that “Fair Go” is interested in some team, otherwise he or she would have come out into the open instead of keeping his or her identity in the dark. As there is an acute shortage of umpires this season, on account of some six or seven members leaving the district, I as the one responsible for the appointing of umpires each week, have a very difficult task before me, in which I am endeavouring to try and please players as well as my fellow umpires. I hope that “Fair Go” will join as an umpire and thus help us in the sport. Also we would be pleased if others would interest themselves in the advancement of hockey by producing a whistle on Saturdays. Thanking you for your valuable space.—l am, etc., W. HARDING,
