A CHRISTIAN HERO.
THE BROUGHTON CENTENARY. OPENING SERVICE IN SYDNEY. SYDNEY, May 29. The official opening service of the Bishop Broughton centenary celebrations was held in St. Andrew's Cathedral last night in the presence of one of the largest assemblages in the history of the Anglican Church in Australia. A brilliant touch was provided by a procession of archbishops, bishops, and others occupying high office in the Anglican Church who are in Sydney from all parts of Australia and other parts of the Empire. The lesson was read by Dr. Averill, Primate of New Zealand.
The Most Rev. C. F. D’Arcy, Archbishop of Armagh, in his sermon, said the Church did well to honour the memory of Bishop Broughton. His was a noble example of untiring work. He had shown the highest qualities, amid great difficulties, of a true Christian hero.
(Bishop Broughton was the first Anglican Bishop of Australia. The celebrations of the centenary of his consecration will continue until Sunday, June 7. The official programme includes a church congress, a missionary exhibition, pilgrimages to Broughton churches, a demonstration by Sunday school children at the Sydney Show Ground, historical and diocesan festivals, and a commemorative service at St. James’ Church, Sydney, marking the anniversary of the installation of Bishop Broughton on June 5, 1836).
