COUNTY COUNCIL.

PROPOSED NEW WORKS. KAIWHATA STREAM BRIDGE. At Wednesday’s annual meeting of the Masterton County Council a letter was received from the District Engineer, Public Works Department, asking that applications by the council for road or bridge construction votes, to be placed on the Public Works estimates for the year 1936-37, be in his hands not later than June 15 in order that they might be forwarded to the Minister of Public Works for consideration. It was decided to ask that the sum of £2,800, provided last year for the construction of the Ruamahunga River bridge at Opaki, be revoted this year and that the new works comprise the Wainuiomapu road bridge, Cottle’s bridge and the Kaiwhata bridge at Homewood. The District Engineer also wrote thanking the council for the use of its auto patrol grader for work on the Rimutaka Hill. The good work performed by the grader had materially assisted the department to carry out its reading programme. An invitation was received from the Akitio County Council for members to attend the official opening of the new county offices at Pongaroa on May 26. It was decided that the council be represented at the gathering. It was decided to place water guages in the Waingawa River where the waters flow over the Waingawa to Camp road at Kopuaranga to show the depth, of the waters -at flood time. -
