! MEETING OF BOROUGH COUNCIL. (“The Age” Special.) ■ A meeting of the Carterton Borough Council was held last night, the Mayor, Mr. W. Fisher, presiding. The treasurer’s statement showed: District fund, cash received since April 1, £196 Is Id; expenditure, £314 10s Id; cash at bank, credit, £1419 12s 2d. Gasworks accounts: Cash received, £422 6s sd; expenditure, £203 4s lid; cash at bank, credit, £691 3s Bd. Accounts: District fund, £214 6s Id; gasworks account, £212 8s were passed. The overseer reported that patching had been carried out on various roads. The sewerage had been cleaned from below the Royal Oak Hotel to the Post Office but no blocks were found. The swimming baths had been cleaned out but the cementing had not yet been dbne as there was still too much water. The gas committee recommended that the tender of Messrs Knutson and Jamieson of £2 7s for the supply of a grating for the purifier at the gasworks be accepted. The manager’s report on the Rexwood Street gas main extension was considered, no action being taken. An application from the manager for the erection of a motor garage was granted. It was recommen-

ded that the Railways Department be written to calling its attention to the inadequacy of the storm water pipes opposite the trucking yards. During April a total of 30 tons 16cwt. of coal was carbonised, producing 424,200 cubic feet of gas, Being an average of 13,760 cubic feet per ton. The relaying of the Wakelin Street main with larger pipes had been completed and these were giving a much increased pressure of gas. The works comfnittee reported that the tender of G. H. Birchall for the installation of 31 chains (approx.) of main sewer in King Street at £9 19s per ohain was accepted. It was decided that a further effort be made to clear the accumulated sediment in the water main in the- borough by means of fire hydrants. The inspector reported that a smoke test had been applied to the 6in. sewer recently laid in King Street and it was found satisfactory.
