TRAFFIC CONTROL

NATIONAL SYSTEM OF LAWS AND INSPECTION. PROVISIONS OF AMENDING BILL. HOPES OF MEASURE APPEARING BEFORE RECESS. WELLINGTON, May 25. The nationalisation of traffic regulations and traffic inspection are two of the major provisions of the Motor Vehicles Amendment Bill, which the Minister of Transport, the Hon. R. Semple hopes to be able to bring down before Parliament adjourns for the short winter recess. “Unless we can get proper control over road traffic we have no chance of reducing the number of accidents on the roads,” said the Minister in an interview. “I regard this as one of our most urgent needs. The Bill will give us power to take this control and to eosure that all vehicles on the roads shall reach an adequate standard of mechanical fitness.” Mr. Semple said the Bill would provide for a nationalised system of traffic inspection and a nationalised schedule of traffic laws, which would apply all over the Dominion. There would be one set of bylaws operating from the North Cape to Bluff Every driver with a licence would receive a copy and it would be seen that he understood them. No matter in what part of the Dominion a motorist happened to be he would know the regulations he had to obey. The Minister added that the Government would endeavour to have traffic inspectors under proper control and to have properly-trained men permanently employed on one job.—(P.A.)
