SENTENCED TO DEATH.
EX-DIRECTOR OF POLAR STATION. ASSISTANT ALSO TO DIE. (Received Sunday, 7.30 p.m.) MOSCOW, May 23. I. D. Simenchuk was sentenced to death. He wept when he heard the verdict. Startsev, described as Simenchuk ’s Man Friday, who murdered Wulfson, was also sentenced to death. He smoked a cigarette while the Court applauded the verdict. (Simenchuk, who had been director of the Polar station on Wrangel Island since 1934, was alleged to have created a dictatorship and ill-treated the scientific staff and local population. It was alleged that when a medical officer, Dr. Wulfson, protested, he received a fictitious emergency call and was murdered en route by Simenchuk ’s assistant . Simenchuk attempted to starve Mrs. Wulfson and denied Eskimos the right to hunt or be fed from the station’s warehouse. Several of them died).
