AUSTRALIAN TENNIS PLAYERS AT GERMANTOWN. PREPARING FOR DAVIS CUP MATCH. (Received Monday, 5.5 p.m.) GERMANTOWN, May 17. Quist,* McGrath and Sproul© engaged in a. light workout to-day, while Crawford took a day off and visited New York. Among the spectators at the Australians’ practice to-day was Mereer Beasley, the famous coach whose observation was that the players were preparing their net advances very carefully and showing remarkable speed in covering the net. From developments at the American camp it appears likely that Budge and Mako will be selected to play in the doubles and will replace the veteran Davis Cup combination of Allison and Van Ryn. The former beat the latter by three straight sets yesterday.
(An arrangement was announced on Saturday whereby the Australian and American tennis teams will use courts on which the Davis Cup match will be played at the end of the month on alternate days, starting on May 25, to accustom them to the lawns., C. Sproule, manager of the Australian team, was assured that there would be no spying by American scouts).
