The Masterton County Council issued three building permits during April of a total value of £771. The Masterton Borough Council issued 10 drivers’ licences in April, bringing the total for the year to 1881. The Masterton County Council issued 15 licences, making its total 1162. The vital statistics registered in Masterton for April are as follow, the figures for the corresponding month last year being shown in parentheses: —Births, 19 (14); deaths, 16 (4); marriages, 12 (13). Members of the Wairarapa Returned Soldiers’ Association are reminded of the annual meeting to be held in the Anzac Club rooms, Perry Street, Masterton on Wednesday evening at 7.30 o’clock.

The latest figures in the Queen Carnival, which is being conducted in aid of the Wairarapa A. and P. Society’s funds, are as follow:—Miss Daphne McLeod (Martinborough), 4788; Miss Rona Jury (Carterton - Greytown), 4708; Miss Maitreen Nix (Featherston), 4268.

An aeroplane from the North Island meeting with very bad weather on Saturday morning returned to Blenheim, landed there and after staying there half an hour came on to Christchurch, arriving 45 minutes late. A northward aeroplane from Dunedin did the flight of 203 miles in 64 minutes and went on to Palmerston North. Yesterday the service was running normally.- ■ Cyril D. Henderson, the youth who was found on a Taumarunui doctor’s doorstep in the early hours of Thursday morning unconscious and severely injured about the /head, is still in hospital but his condition is now satisfactory. A large pool of blood was found at a street intersection about 150 yards from the doctor’s premises, and other patches of blood were found further along the street, indicating that the youtln- suffered extensive bleeding. It is now stated that another young man called on another doctor in the early hours of the same morning and received treatment for two wounds in the back, which appeared to have been inflicted with a knife. —'(PA.)
