MORTGAGE ADJUSTMENT
BILL GETS SUBSTANTIAL MAJORITY. IN DIVISION ON SECOND READING. DEFENCE OF THE BUDGETARY SYSTEM. (By Telegraph—>‘The Age” Special) WELLINGTON, March 21. With the Hon. W. Downie Stewart voting with the Opposition against the Government, the House of Representatives to-night, by 44 votes to 26 accorded a second reading to the Rural Mortgagors Final Adjustment Bill. A spirited defence of the budgetary system was made, in the course of his reply in the debate, by the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, who, however, did not indicate what is to substituted for the abandoned 20 per cent, equity provision. A first reading was given to Sir Alexander Young’s Local Elections and Polls Temporary Amendment Act, under which county ratepayers who are not more than two years in arrears will be able to vote at the forthcoming elections. The House then proceeded with the second reading debate on another Government Bill on the Order Paper—a measure which seeks to increase the orchard tax. The Orchard Tax Bill was passed through all its stages atfd the House rose at 11.10 p.m.
