LEVIN & CO., LTD.

Messrs Levin and Co., Ltd., report:—* Chir catalogue represented 5,401 bales. The wool was comprised largely of crossbred of top making character, with a quantity of halfbred and a small lot or two of Merino. The binned wools under the * 4 Kaiwarra *' brand totalled 1,250 bales and provided’ most of the super lines of crossbred, and these met with exceptionally keen competition, many of the main lots realising Bd, SJd and Bld. The current sales in London have been very disappointing, and it was generally expected that prices would decline here, but this, fortunately, did not occur, and the general run of crossbred prices was fully equal to February rates, and in some grades a distinct advance. Bidding was very vigorous and keen. Bradford buyers were working hard. The Continent was bidding freely. France and Belgium were strong buyers of all grades, particularly fine wool, bellies, pieces, lambs and scouring lots. Dominion mills were operating for halfbreds and ' lambs wool. The following are the changes as against February sales: — Merino and halfbred, $d down; extra fine crossbred, 48/50, par; fine and medium crossbreds, 44/48, id advance; coarse crossbred, 40/44, jd advance; low crossbred, 36/40, par; hoggets, par; lambs, Id down; crossbred bellies and pieces, par to -Jd down; crutchings, par; locks, Ad down. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., report: —Our quota was 2416 bales. There was a full bench of buyers representing the United Kingdom, Australia, France, Germany, Japan, Dominion mills, local fellmongers and scourers, as well as speculators. Competition right from the outset to the close was exceptionally keen. Prices, as compared with southern sales, were slightly dearer but compared with last sale at this centre they were much on a par. The offering contained a few lots of super wool, the bulk being good to inferior topmaking sorts. Lambs J wool was not quite up to the previous sale quality, being mostly slightly to heavy seedy and prices were much on a par with last sale rates. Bradford representatives were very keen, securing the major portion of the offering with Japan and the Continent picking up suitable lots. The Continent were the strongest competitors for pieces at prices slightly firmer than late rates. With the drop in the London market, reported at the opening series it w r as anticipated that prices here might ease but we are pleased to report, instead of easing, that the market right though was a shade firmer than southern rates.

W.F.C.A. LTD.

The W.F.C.A. Ltd. report: All sections of the trade were represented and competition was keen and sustained on definitely restricted limits. Continental buyers appeared to obtain the bulk of the finer parcels in our cata logue, Bradford being unusually quiet except on medium quality lines. Prices for good quality wools of 40/50 count were very firm and fully equal to February values with ,ower grades from par to id easier. Lambs wool met with very erratic competition, local mills securing the bulk of the offering. Crutchings sold particularly well whilst bellies and pieces showed a decline of from par to Jd on February values. We disposed of 90 per cent, of our catalogue under the hammer. MURRAY ROBERTS & CO. Messrs Murray Roberts & Co., Ltd., report: Our catalogue consisted of 3,001 bales, mainly average topmaking wools with a few lines of better class crossbreds in evidence. Competition was very keen and fairly well spread, more especially on wools showing fine quality and good style, which were in keenest demand, and for such wools the prices realised were fully up to last month’s level, with average crossbreds showing occasionally a decline of a farthing. Pieces and bellies were about a halfpenny lower than February, and lambs wool was decidedly irregular with values up to a penny lower, more especially in the better grade lambs. Brad- | ford bought consistently and Continental buyers were bidding well on all lots suitable, France being active for the best lines of skirtings, *finest crossbreds and halfbreds. Amongst our binned wools under "Pipitea” brand we offered some nice lots which came under the keenest competition, one lot of Super Down bringing 123 d. N.ZT.C. DISTRIBUTING CO., LTD.

The N.Z. F.C.D. Company Ltd. report: We contributed 4007 bales. There was a fully representative bench of buyers. Our catalogue* was a good Bradford selection with, the exception of a few' outstanding clips. The market at to-day's sale was generally very animated and showed considerable briskness so far as bidding was concerned. The prices realised can be considered very satisfactory from the growers* point of view. Bradford was again the largest operator, its chief competitors being France and Russia, whose competition was responsible for sustaining prices and making the sale a much better one than was anticipated during the past few days. America, Canada and Japan were in the market for wool suitable for their requirements. Germany was buying very little. Hoggets showing quality and style were in good demand and can be quoted up to Id dearer than at the last •Wellington sale while other sorts were firm. Ewes and wethers, particularly those showing style and quality can be -quoted at id to Id dearer. Lambs wool was very erratic and competition for this class of wool was very limited, local mills taking the best lines at prices Id cheaper than last sale while -faulty lines, those off colour and showing seed, were difficult of sale and

a fair proportion was passed in and can be quoted generally at }d to 13d cheaper. Pieces came in for some very good competition, good bulky lines showing quality being from id dearer -and were taken by the Continent and local mills, while average lines were very firm, very few’ lots failing to reach valuation. Bellies were in good demand, the bulk going to the Continent and local scourers and were firm on the last sale. Good average and best crutchings were in good demand and compared with fleece realised very satisfactory prices, as high as 6d being paid for super lots. Good average lines can be quoted at 43d to 53d, with inferior lots at 3^d to 4Ad. Our Wairarapa realisations are:— OCB: Lbs 4id. WRIGHT STEPHENSON & CO. Messrs Wright, Stephenson & Co., Ltd., report as follows: We offered 3,033 bales and sold 2,878. As has been customary during the current season, the Home trade dominated to-day's market, again being by far the largest buyers, with good support from France and Belgium, and some help from Germany and Japan. British trade advices are encouraging, and it is reasonable to expect with an increased purchasing power, the public will buy more clothes. On the other hand, manu facturers are compelled to ke6p prices within specified limits. Multiple store; have branches everywhere, and theii class of business thrives on selling goods at low prices such as a man's suit at 50/-. These stores place order! for millions of yards of fabric at prices within certain limits, and the increas ed use of bellies, pieces and locks en able mill men to meet such customers requirements. The growth of the sys tern of mass merchandising is one o the reasons why skirtings, etc., find 1 more ready use now than in years gon by, and also explains why some ar now selling comparatively better thai ' fleece wool. The mills in France an ' Belgium are not running at anythin, I like normal volume, and the state o I the trade in the former country i I causing disappointment and some appn I hension. Her requirements of rai | material have been curtailed. German I has acquired larger supplies in recen I months, but although she has all th

facilities Tor 'manufaetaring, she can buy no more than she can sell. It may be that her recent activity has been occasioned to some extent by anticipatioti of the requirements of her larger standing army. Consideration of these conditions in Europe must be taken into account in reckoning up the future of the market. Wool enjoys a world demand, but the statistical position, although sound, is dominated by the inability of the world as a whole to resume normal buying operations. At today’s sale, most attractive clips sold well but for the average wools, the market was erratic and lambs wool was decidedly easier, in some eases to the extent of Id. Speaking generally, the variation in all other classes of fleece wool was almost negligible. Crutchings on the other hand, were decidedly firmer. DALGETY & CO., LTD. Messrs Dalgety and Co., Ltd., report: —~We offered 3500 bales and sold 87 per eent. under the - hammer. There was animated competition at restricted limits. Bradford were the largest buyers, with Canada, Japan and France operating freely for a medium selection of crossbreds, mainly of top-maling sorts. As compared with the February sale tie quality of the offering was considered good. Crossbreds, 4fi/50s, were at par with February rates. Medium and low crossbreds were irregular, being at par to id cheaper. There was a good demand for hogget wool, prices being firm at late rates. Good skirting sorts were firm, France being the principal buyers. There was a keen demand for crutchings and' good free lines can be quoted at fully id dearer. Some of our realisations were:—•
