FIRE PREVENTION WEEK.

DISPLAYS ON SATURDAY AFTERNOON. OBSERVANCE IN MASTEKBON. Every evening this week the Masterton Fire Brigades ’• engines are tuning out at 7.30 o’clock to display slogans to draw public attention to Fire Prevention Week, which is being observed throughout New Zealand. The station is open every night ttp till 10 o’clock for inspection and the staff is willing to give any information appertaining to the work of the brigade. To-morrow at 2 o’clock there win be a general turnout for children and adults and the Superintendent of the Brigade would be pleased to see a large attendance of children. Last year there were over 300 children and parents present. At 3 o’clock the pumping unit of the Brigade will give a display with hoees from the Park Lake. The Government has had large circulars and placards printed and these are being distributed by brigades. These notices have been printed-w strong paper with a view to having them placed in conspicuous positions in shops, offices and factories, etc. In 1931 the Dominion suffered lossee through fire amounting to £1,292,094 in the aggregate, whereas in 1933 the total had dropped to £644,781 —a reduetion of £647,313. The reasons for sunk a substantial decrease are difficult to determine, but without doubt the edn.feation of the public so far as fire causes and the precautionary measures to be taken are concerned has played s part to that end.
