A heroic attempt to rescue a woman who had jumped from a railway bridge near Hamilton yesterday morning was made by W. Tudhope, who noticed her plight and swam to her assistance. Mr. Tudhope, who lives on the river bank, was told on the telephone by a friend further up the river that a woman was floating down the river and calling out for help. Mr. Tudhope immediately rushed down a steep bank from the house to the river clothed in his pyjamas. He saw the woman floating down over threequarters of the way across the river and immediately plunged in and swam towards her. As he was nearing her she sank twice, and just before he reached her she sank again and did not reappear. The woman’s name is understood to be Mrs. P. Campbell, of Francis Street, Claudelands.
