BOROUGH WORK.

REPORTS FOR PAST MONTH. At last night's meeting of the Borough Council the Borough Engineer, Mr. C. R. Mabson, reported as follows on the work carried out during July: . Streets: Maintenance work was carried out in Chapel and Michael Streets, Park Avenue and Columba Road. The new roadway northern approach io Hope Street is progressing satisfactorily, the northern turf wall being completed to the stop bank, and roadway i filling will also be completed to stop bank to-morrow. The Allan Memorial Bridge is proceeding slowly, concrete piers having been completed and steel girders- placed in , position. Chapel Street paths from Wrigley to Hope Street have been regraded, and roadway is being scarified and regraded also. A start has also been made with the re-grading and widening of Hope Street path, south side. Water and drainage: During the month two new services and 10 renewals were put in. Lansdowne reservoir was emptied andcleaned out. Building permits: During the month 17 permits were issued, having an estimated value of £4690 ss, the fees thereon amounting to £lB 15s. For the corresponding period last year, 13 permits were issued, having an estimated value of £2540 10s.

BOROUGH INSPECTOR’S REPOEfT. The Borough Inspector (-Mr. T. A. Russell) reported:— Notifiable Infectious Disease: I am pleased to be able to again report that no case of notifiable disease was notified during the month. Dangerous goods: Four underground tanks with the necessary pumping installation were tested. House to house inspection: We have been able to carry out a good deal of house inspection. Although the plumbing and drainage requisition figures are high, a good many of the repairs are of a minor nature. The premises for the most part are in good order. Traffic: Nine applicants for driver’s licenses were examined, one failing to pas sthe test. Heavy traffic fees for the month amounted to £39 19s 2d. Lighting and brake testing:— In pursuance of the request of the Transport Department, special attention has been given to motor lighting and brake testing work, particularly the latter. Over 600 vehicles were test ed. Owing to the publicity given to this matter, the public have had ample time to have their brakes put in order, and few foot brakes did not comply with the regulation. Quite a number of hand brakes however were not efficient. In future, this work will be dope as a routine matter and unless brakes, both'foot and hand, are kept in a satisfactory condition, it will be necessary to take further action. GAS MANAGER’S REPORT. The Gas Engineer-Manager (Mr. James Learmonth) reported inter alia, I as follows:— I Gas manufactured: During July was 4,756,000 c. ft. being an increase of .74 per cent, over the corresponding period of last year. Gas sold per meter shows a decrease of 3.4 per cent. The Government Inspector visited the Works on July 25 arid tested and passed 28 meters. Calorific value of the gas was 450 b.t.u. —sulphuretted hydrogen absent. The Boiler Inspector visited the works on the 16th. inst. to inspect boilers and machinery. The pressure on the vertical boiler was reduced from 701bs to 601bs. Our main boiler is still carrying 150Ibs. PARK CUSTODIAN’S REPORT. The Park Custodian (Mr. H. Sturgeon) reported as follows:—The general work of the Park has been carried out satisfactorily during the month. The pruning of street trees, digging,

pruning and manuring roses, pruning of all trees and shrubs in the Park, enttin back three Arundo Conspicua, and tho painting of all seats in the Park has been completed. The grubbing of Allan’s Avenue is progressing satisfactorily. The work for the month will be hoeing and cleaning all paths and drives in the Park, cleaning and forking all beds and borders, making a start to get the playing areas in order, and general Park work.
