BOROUGH COUNCIL.

EXTRAORDINARY VACANCY. MEMBER TO BE CO-OPTED. The Masterton Borough Council decided, at its meeting last night, to fill the vacancy on the council caused by the death of the late Mr. H. J. O’Leary by co-opting a qualified elector. Under a comparatively new clause in the Municipal Corporations Act the council now has power to adopt this course in prefcreuee to an ordinary election. Councillors considered that the expense of an election should be obviated if possible and a committee consisting of the Mayor, Mr. T. Jordan, and Councillors A. D. Low and W. L. Free, was set up to bring down a report and recommendations to the next meeting of the council.

The new councillor will hold office until next May when the first of the triennial local body election will be held.
