AN IMMENSE WEIR.
GREAT IRRIGATION PROJECT IN AUSTRALIA. SAFEGUARDS AGAINST DROUGHT. (Received Friday, 8.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, May 4. The immense Hume Weir, near the border of New South Wales and Victoria, is to be completed at the end of next month. It will have a capacity of 1,250,606 acre feet when full. Victoria will be entitled to use half the* water impounded for irrigation, while at least a million acres of land on the New South Wales side will be irrigated. The Riverina and Victojian pastoral and wheat areas will -be safeguarded against droughts. Upwards of fifteen years have been occupied in the construction of the works.
The total cost of the Hume Wenwill be £5,500,000.
