CIVIL SERVICE CUTS.

NO RESTORATION THIS YEAR. STATEMENT BY MK. FORBES. AUCKUWD, May 4. “Owing to the statecof the country’s finances it will not be possible for the Government' Ws year to restore the wage and salary reductions which were applied to the Civil Service during the height of the depression in- Ntew Zealand, ’ ’ said the Prime Minister, the Bt. Forbes- this morning He was asked whether Cabinet wfculd be influenced to any extent by the action of local bodies and private employers who in different parts of the country were restoring the whole or portion of “cuts.’” “All along,” said’ Mr. Forbes, “T have endeavoured tomake it clear- that the 'Governmentdoes not object to reductions -being restored where- firms or local bodies are in a position safely to do so. Wherethdt position exists we think ‘cuts’ should be given back, but as far as the Civil Service is concerned, the circumstances aro totally different. The-fin-ances Of- the country at present could not stand* the strain. Accordingly we have not yet reached the sage at which we can-consider returning to- the State’s employees any part of the reduction we were compelled, in the interests of the workers themselves, as much as in the interests of the oountrv to impose.”—(P.A.)
