JAPAN PURCHASES IN NEW MARKET. ISLAND NEAR SINGAPORE. THE HAGUE, May 2. It is reported that a Japanese aluminium company, operating in Formosa, has agreed to take nearly 24,000 tons of bauxite yearly, yielding 6000 tons of aluminium from the Dutch Nibaim company, working deposits in the island of -Bintang, near Singapore, enabling Japan to be largely independent of America in the preparation of aluminium for aeroplanes. (The island of Bintang is only a few miles across the strait from Singapore. Bauxite is the chief ore from which aluminium is electrically smelted.)
